Research and Society Service Institute of University of PGRI Semarang holds a very crucial role in carrying out the importance of the Thi Dharma of higher education: education, research, and society service. The amalgamation of research center and society service was executed under the decree of the rector number 124/SK/IKIP PGRI/IV/2011. The research and society service institute coordinates two centers: Research Center and Educator Profession and Student Society Service Development Center.
The vision of Research and Society Service Institute is to make the Research and Society Service Institute as the supporter of the process of creating professional and stellar teachers whith strong characteristics.
The missions are (1) to yield stellar and professional researchers and society service devotees who possess pedagogic, personality, professional and social skills, (2) develop a religious, nationalist, loyal, and Pancasila-based academic culture which serves to provide devotion and service to society; (3) improve and establish internal and external cooperation; (4) develop and create supreme produces of research and society empowerment; (5) achieve and improve the Intellectual Rights for research and the development of society service in protecting intellectual rights; (6) develop the independence of the institute and research centers and society service.
Research and Society Service Institute conducts service and research cooperation funded by either University of PGRI Semarang, Directorate General of Higher Education, or Central Government. Since 2003 until 2010, Research and Society Service Institute conducted a joint research with REDIP II Program, SISTTEMS, and PELITA with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), Education and Culture Department, and Directorate General of PMPTK in West Java, Central Java, East Java and North Sulawesi. Meanwhile, the activities of society service that have been conducted by the Research and Society Service Institute covered activities such as trainings for the society, the development of villages under the guidance of Research and Society Service Institute in the area of central Java, the implementation of Student society service in cooperation with the government and private institution such as Province Education Department (Students society service to eradicate illiteracy in Central Java, the empowerment of Posyandu as the Early Childhood education center), Pangdam IV Diponegoro (Babinsa training as the tutor to eradicate illiteracy), education department in Semarang (technical trainings for teachers, trainings to use computer as teaching media, trainings on how to write text books for high school teachers), BAPEDA (low-income residents in Semarang, identification and clarification of low-income residents, and Gardu Kempling program). Research and Society Service Institute has been a partner for teachers in developing their careers through activities such as trainings, workshops, seminar, joint scientific writings curriculum development and student enrollment, out-of school education and other activities.
